Previous staffing experience
Around 2016 to 2017, I was a staff member on Smithtainment Gaming's 24/7 Minecraft TTT server, working my way from trial moderator to admin. To take in how long ago this was - we were still using Skype at the beginning of my time there, and we transferred to Discord towards the end of it.
When I was an admin, I had a few additional primary tasks alongside day-to-day moderator duties - I managed the staff exam for trial moderators, I also trained trial moderators (one of my favorite parts of staffing), and also managed day-to-day staff tasks like ban appeals and player reports.
Unfortunately, I did leave the server as life had gotten in the way at the time.
Why should you be considered for a moderator position?
I believe I have shown that I am committed to being a part of the Giant's Lair community and have a desire to continue to help it grow. I have had nothing but positive experiences with many of the non-regulars and regulars that play on Giant's Lair. As a moderator I want my focus should be to serve all of the users that commit their time, energy, and (in some cases) money to the server and want to play TTT in a good environment - which is something I am more than prepared to do.
In addition, I believe that my previous staff experience, as well as my real work experience that directly involves conflict management and team collaboration (see below), allows me to handle situations calmly and fairly, and gives me a solid foundation that I would only look to improve upon if I were to become a moderator for Giant's Lair.
I would also add that I believe I am very adaptable and am a quick learner - traits that are also very useful for a moderator position.
Do you meet all the minimum requirements listed in the Requirements Thread?
If not, please explain which requirement(s) you don’t meet and why.
I do meet all of the minimum requirements.
Why do you want to join the Giants Lair staff team?
Giant's Lair has been nothing but a positive experience for me. The community has been nothing short of a joy to be a part of, and the staff team is incredible. I want to contribute to growing this awesome community, and I want to dedicate myself to helping out the staff team in any way I can. I want to contribute to the health and success of the server in a way that also gives back to the users that truly care about the community and wanting to make a fun and fair environment in TTT.
To be quite honest, I also simply just enjoy being a moderator in TTT in general. It adds another aspect to the game that I personally enjoy quite a lot, and I know it's not for everyone. During my time on SG, I enjoyed having my brain be put to work when it comes to handing out punishments, and it puts your multi-tasking capabilities to the test.
I also enjoy the administrative side of being a staff member, including participating in staff meetings and handling reports. I truly believe that the skills you acquire being a staff on a TTT server are transferable to real-life (multi-tasking, conflict management, collaboration with teams) and while I feel that I do well in these skills, there is always room for improvement, and I would love to continue to improve them where I can.
What skills or experiences do you bring to the team? (e.g., past staffing, conflict resolution, technical knowledge, etc.)
I actually bring a little bit of everything in terms of skills and experiences that could be beneficial to the server!
I would refer to my above staffing experience for the first part of this question.
In addition to my staffing experience (which already allowed me to develop foundational conflict management skills), I was an employee at McDonalds during college (2018-2021), in which I worked my way from a crew member to a manager. I don't think I need to tell you that, often, guests can get out of control if they get a wrong order or have a bad experience with an employee. I feel that my time there significantly helped to build my conflict resolution skills that are transferable to a TTT setting. Also to note - during my time there, I would also train new crew members to work at particular stations, whether it's in the kitchen or up-front.
Another aspect of my experiences that could be relevant - I graduated with a degree in computer engineering, and right now I am a software developer for a non-tech company. My team works on solving problems every day based on company needs, and sometimes there can be disagreements as to the most efficient way to solve a particular problem. My job also requires an incredible amount of communication - you don't want to push changes you've made to code into production without testing/getting your code reviewed by your team - this alone can lead to disagreements. This has also helped develop my ability to communicate efficiently with my team and handle potential conflict.
As for technical knowledge, my background in a multitude of programming languages including C++, Java, Python, HTML/CSS/PHP, Go, etc. could also potentially benefit the server from a development perspective, but that is not the focus of my application.
How active are you across our platforms (GMod, Discord, Forums)? Provide a breakdown if possible.
I have been incredibly active on the server over the past few weeks, and on Discord as well.
With that being said, I am working on increasing my forum presence, as I know how integral an active forums is for a server and community to grow and be successful.
How much time can you realistically dedicate to staffing per week?
I anticipate somewhere in the 10-15 hour range per week (somewhere between 1-2 hours a day, more on Fridays/weekends). I do work a full-time job.
How well do you handle pressure, criticism, or heated situations?
I can handle pressure, criticism and heated situations incredibly well. Again, my previous staffing and work experience really helped me grow in this aspect because the working environment is often incredibly fast-paced and the pressure always exists to perform your tasks to a high standard. I think any well-run organization has a high standard for its employees.
I absolutely welcome feedback/criticism and I use it to improve the way I operate on a day-to-day basis.
How would you describe your conflict resolution style?
Active listening, and finding compromise where possible.
One thing I've learned that is a huge part of conflict resolution is active listening - meaning, hearing what a user's issue is so you can formulate a calm and level-headed response to actually address and resolve the situation. If you don't know what the issue is and how you can bring the temperature down in a situation, you likely won't know how to solve it, or solve it properly. This works really well in team settings and also quite often in TTT, even if you're the one handing out the punishment.
The ideal solution is compromise where possible once you fully understand the issue, but very often (especially in TTT) a lot of things are done by the rulebook. Conflict can very easily arise against you when you deliver punishments to rule-breaking users. In the case where someone will try to argue with you, I've learned to not take anything personally, and you have to be able to stand for your decisions when it comes to dealing punishments. I find the best way to defuse a situation like this is to maintain respectful dialogue and try to educate the user on why something is against the rules - this promotes mutual understanding and I find it really goes a long way to defuse tension.
Are you familiar with the TTT server rules and general community standards?
Very much so. I have taken the time to read the rules of the server and standards expected of community members and staff members.
What does your punishment history (if any) look like on our servers? Be honest — transparency is appreciated.
I do not have any punishment history on the server.
What is your reputation like within the community? Can you name any reputable players or staff who would vouch for you?
I believe I have a good reputation. I think I have proven this with my lack of punishment history and interaction with others on the server and in the community.
I also truly believe that users would say that I am a good player to play with and, as far as I know, users do not have any issues with me.
Below are the following staff members that can vouch for me:
Pigeon
Anna
Lync
Sure Lock Homes
Muffin
I would like to thank the staff team for the consideration, and please do not hesitate to ask me questions for clarification if necessary.
Edit 1: Just fixing up some formatting now that I can see it live.

You know, I could write a long response as to why you'd be an amazing addition, or I could be brief. So why don't I do a bit of both?

Nothing but good times with you, even today.
You are well-versed in our rules, an experienced staff member yourself, and well known by now amongst everyone.

You even share my own love for trial mods! Definetely the right man for the Cyan tag.

Ah, and as a Software Architecture student, hi from a layer above in the programming ladder :D

+1.

+1 you were a positive presence the couple of times I have been on with you and you have a well written app. Easy pickup imo

Hello Random Props,

You have a great attitude and are generally very fun to play with. I am very glad you applied and think you would make a great addition to the staff team.

I think you'd be an excellent choice for someone to pick up. I think you have the right mindset to be a staff member here and the effort you put in to your application is also reflective of that. You're a joy to be on the server with, you don't cause issues, and you seem to have a good grasp on our rules. I'd love to see you get a shot at this.

Hello Mr. Props. I’ll have to say, you’re a great presence on the server. You’re funny, positive, and also have been a genuinely pleasant person. You haven’t been an issue every time I’ve been on and playing with you, and your attitude has been a massive point in your favor. Good work, and I wish you luck on your application!

+1 from me.

Hello wink - firstly, I appreciate the comment.

I personally have not possessed anyone myself as a T with it, but I actually did have some feedback to provide on it because of a particular situation that happened to me earlier today.

When I was possessed, the person that possessed me killed an innocent (as expected) and had not fully controlled me yet. As a result, when they killed the innocent player, it showed up as me [innocent] killing them, and understandably this player thought it was RDM and did report me for it not knowing that I was possessed. I did get the chance to explain to the user that it was indeed the traitor that possessed me who killed him - that was the first time I'd ever been possessed with it.

I don't remember if I lost karma for it, but I do think score is impacted. I'm not sure if it can be modified to always show the traitor as the one killing during the possession no matter the stage, but that would be a slight change I would recommend making to it if possible.

Other than that, I think the idea behind it is very interesting and fits with the halloween vibe on the server right now. 🙂

Hello Random Props and everyone! I just have to say...

Coming from someone who loves this server, this game, players and just to be able to hop on and have a good time and some smiles having fun...

Random Props,

You have done exactly what I love about how the players (and in this case how the staff) would behave/be kind/friendly/easy to talk to and more. So so many good times playing and chatting with you already, and I give you a huge thank you for that!

Staff. Please give Random a shot at being a moderator. He's exactly what I'd expect and love about how the staff act an behave in this game and I truly feel he'd be a perfect perfect fit!!

Good luck my friend!

+1
