Hello everyone, this is an idea I've been kicking around for a while, and I'm making this thread to gauge interest before fully setting it up.

The idea would be a series of pokemon challenges over the course of 10 or so weeks. Each week would be a different gym battle with a total of 8 gym battles, 4 elite four battles, and a champion battle.

At the start of each week, I would post the team you would be playing against for the week's gym badge. You would have the entire week to build a team to beat mine and arrange a time to battle with me. If you're able to beat my team, you move on. The goal is to survive through the champion battle and come out on top.

It's still a loose idea, but if there's interest then I'd be happy to flesh it out more. Here are some of the specifics I had in mind:

  • Players will know my team in advance, and I will not know their team in advance.
  • Players must abide by ban lists, level caps, team size limits, etc. My teams may not always abide by ban lists, but will always abide by level caps and team size limits.
  • Players may change their teams at any point, but must use the same team for the elite 4 and champion battles. Just like how it works in the games.
  • Unless otherwise stated, players may make 3 attempts to beat the week's gym challenge. This is flexible, but the rule is in place out of respect for my time.
  • If a player does not work out a time during the week to battle, they are eliminated. Extra grace may be extended or someone else may be asked to battle with my team on my behalf as needed for scheduling.
  • If a player is eliminated for any reason, they may continue to participate in future weeks but will not be eligible to win.
  • Prize: Honestly in multiple years of hosting pokemon showdown tournaments, I've found that the people who participate usually don't care about the prize so much as just getting to play pokemon, so the prize is kinda secondary here. That said, something structured like this would be cool to have a prize for, so I would tentatively say that I'll give 10,000 points to anyone who wins, and that prize will gradually increase as I save more points and depending on how many or few people make it to the end. But really, play for bragging rights.
  • This would be hosted in Gen 7, at least this time.
  • Ban List:
    • All rules for the given battle’s format must be followed.
      • This includes smogon-wide clauses like sleep clause, evasion clause, species clause, and endless battle clause.
    • No legendary or mythical pokemon are allowed unless the battle’s rules specifically allow it. (I am aware that legendary =/= strong, and it’s a bit silly to limit the number of legendary pokemon in an ubers battle. This limitation exists to mimic the flavor of a normal pokemon game.)
    • Your team may not contain more pokemon than mine.
    • Each week's battle may contain additional rules.

this seems like a lot of fun! I'm down to give it a whirl

If anyone is interested in joining at any point, you have until the first challenge ends to do so to still be in the running to win the whole gym challenge. After that, you may still participate but you will be considered eliminated. Also please let me know if you would like guidance on how to use pokemon showdown or how to build teams.

Welcome Trainers! Here are the details for the first battle:
  • The format is Gen 7 Little Cup
  • All Little Cup rules must be followed, and your team must be valid by the showdown team builder for Gen 7 Little Cup
  • Additionally, you may not bring more than 3 pokemon, and your pokemon may not hold any items other than berries
  • This is the team I am bringing, and I will always lead with noibat
My schedule will be inconsistent for a little bit, and given that it's currently the middle of the holiday season, I'm going to tentatively set the deadline to complete this first battle with me to Saturday, January 10th. If we're all finished before then, we'll move on early. Feel free to tag me on discord in the pokemon channel at any time you're free to battle. My time zone is Eastern Time (UTC-5) and I'll generally be available in afternoons and evenings.

As a reminder, you have 3 attempts to beat my team and you are freely able to change your team up at any time. You are encouraged to plan and bring a team specifically designed to counter mine rather than a team designed to be balanced.

Good luck everyone!
