To be frank, only needing to be on once every 90 days to keep your claim is stupid.

Upkeep costs are a good money sink and with how low upkeeps were and how easy it is to make money. It's kind of a skill issue if you can't.
If you care that much, tax the people you trust, you may risk war though :)

+1, money is frankly so easy to gather that upkeep costs are more than negligible they are just a check that people allctually play, now I would argue that both should be active as some claims (mine) have enough money in them that it could last years.

The concept of John Giants Lair joining at launch, claiming next to spawn and disappearing for months at a time doesn't feel great.

Also the concept of a money sink is nice as we don't really have many sinks right now

Regardless of what direction we take, this is definitely a change that needs to be discussed in depth. We need this to be locked in and communicated extremely well to respect all of your time spent playing on our server engaging with what's going on.

Here's the current ad read for the server we've been drafting:

GIANTS LAIR MC
[SMP] {Story-Driven} {World Building} {Dungeons} {Economy} {Community}

Step into a server where community comes first, and friendships are forged.

Giants Lair MC is a SMP server focused on player-driven narratives, meaningful conflict, and long-term world development. Whether you're founding a kingdom, delving into dangerous dungeons, trading your way to power, or carving out a quiet corner of the world, your actions leave a lasting mark.

⚔️ WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

  • Story-Driven Conflict: Wars, alliances, and rivalries are part of the experience. Conflict is encouraged—but it should mean something. Utilize your limited /land claims to protect your lands.
  • Player-Driven Worldbuilding: Create towns, factions, and legacies that other players will interact with—and remember.
  • Dynamic Player Economy: Trade, shops, and resource control all play a role in shaping power. Wealth can be built through commerce, diplomacy, or conquest. MCMMO is present to give you the boost you need.
  • Semi-Vanilla Feel: Enhanced gameplay without losing the core Minecraft experience.
  • Dungeons & Exploration: Discover challenges, loot, and danger scattered across the world.
  • Active Community: A growing playerbase that values interaction, competition, and collaboration.
  • No wipes, ever. Your creations will last a lifetime here, and be woven into the world's tapestry of stories.

🧭 SERVER PHILOSOPHY

We strike a balance between freedom and longevity:

You are free to fight, raid, trade, and shape the world.

But the world itself—and the stories within it—are worth preserving.

This is not pure anarchy, and not a safe haven.

It’s a world where your choices matter.

🌍 WHO IT’S FOR

✔ Builders who want their creations to exist in a living, evolving world forever

✔ Traders and merchants looking to thrive in a player-driven economy

✔ Explorers and adventurers seeking risk and reward

✔ Communities looking to form factions, towns, and alliances

With a no wipe "shit lasts forever" mindset, it seems calculated to go one of two directions:

No expiration, if the server is interested in seeing wars affect borders/lands cater to it that way.

Upkeep, wars could play the role in redistributing stuff as well. Upkeep notably incentives money sinks as well.

I'm really not worried about the spawn stuff right now; /wild is super accessible and the Bluemap is a great tool to assist players in settling their own spot.

Upkeep or no upkeep, I think 3 months to expire is an absurdly lenient timeframe. Especially considering all that's needed is a log in log out to reset the timer.

I've no opinion on reintroducing upkeep, but regardless, I would give serious consideration to timing claims out after 30 days, instead of 90 days. If you're not even on the server once a month, then frankly you aren't really an active player and it should be fair game for others to claim or raid the area.
Active player enjoyment > Inactive player protection.
