TTT Maps Purge Megathread

This is a thread for you guys to voice your concerns about the maps that we have in rotation that are boring, annoying or kill population whenever they get voted on

Similar to the weapon megathread, I will be taking all your suggestions and creating a proposition of what maps should be purged and the reasons why. Once I make the proposition and you guys are happy with it, I will run it by the big guys and hopefully we can cull these dreaded maps for good!

Northernseas and Albatross are the two worst culprit maps for killing population and are generally just boring, awful maps

I am pretty vocal about wanting MC maps in the rotation, but I also can't deny that the new MC inno motel map is also pretty disappointing compared to its counterpart

I do not see Albatross being a pop killer, and ive seen users having fun on both North Sea and Albatross more than most other maps. Meanwhile, most MC maps, especially MC recreations of existing maps, are generally boring, janky, and just generally unfun. There is no instance where a MC version of a map is better than its standard source counterpart. The only exception that proves the rule is Nuketown, but even Nuketown is its own creative version of the map. Not to mention i feel like the drowning of a server in MC maps directly lead to a decline of players on AHG, and I'd hate to see that here. Its just boring as hell.


I think we need to remove all MC remakes of maps on the server. We should replace innomotel with Optimal's version. We should replace the ladders on Dolls with the magnetized ladders near the top of the lighthouse on B5. And there is a specific MC map that we should remove but I can't think of the name of it... its a square of a map with no light...

There are multiple documented instances of both those maps killing population, and I can also say that my experiences playing on those maps also solidify the idea that pop significantly drops upon switching to them: https://giantslair.com/threads/maps-that-murder-server-population.1021/. I would love to see some actual statistics/numbers on this pulled directly from the server (not sure if it's even possible) but I'm pretty confident they would corroborate this theory.

I can agree with you though that MC remakes can be replaced with other, fresher maps - they are generally worse than their original counterparts. I would still love to see classics like casino and schoolday in the rotation myself. But I am still a big proponent of keeping "original" MC maps that are popular like city and b5 in the rotation because those are heavy attractors of newer players - more than any other maps from my decade experience of GMod staffing.
 
I'm on the side of removing most of the MC maps, It's not fun when someone mic spams to play MC Motel/Dolls and then after we play regular Dolls,Motel in a rotation. Either more maps need to be added / replace ones that are a population killer or implement the restricted voting feature. Maybe both so we have variety.

As far as I know the reason I believe Albatross is a population killer is the spawns, there's always one person who door blocks and you can't kill them until a traitor does something and by that point it's too late cause everyone is shooting everyone

We gotta remove the double mc maps like Dolls and such, but do keep stuff like seriouscraft and I forget the name but the one with the "fuck you go die" trap in the middle of the map with the farm.

Also Northsea is fun for like the first minute of the round with the crane, then each round just drags on for another three minutes.
 
Given we don't have any big holiday change ups on the horizon unless we do a "summer" map update, I'd like to suggest having two main branches of the server with two slightly varied map pools that rotate every 2-4 weeks. If executed correctly, all a dev in theory would need to do is push one branch to production over the other whenever that time is found.

The proposed map pool rotation would make an effective pool of roughly ~70 maps at a time, rotating out ~25 percent of the pool each rotation. I could see an argument for adding more suggested maps to the mix to see if there are any bangers we haven't tried as easy new content, but this would allow us to hold onto controversial maps in a sustainable way that doesn't dillute our pool entirely.

I personally love Albatross and have great memories of playing it back on SGM. But I think it might best be reserved for high pop because of its size. That and what you said, the door blocking can be funny but god damn is it a bitch lol.
 
for mc maps i feel like most of the clones have to go other than richland, and christmas town. b5 should have been gone for a while now maps like seriouscraft, jondome, airship and skycraft should stay. remove really big boring flat maps like lego and and pelican town (cool idea's for maps but suck). make small ass maps like rust only appear when there are under 16 players playing (idk if that already exists now but ive played that map with full pop before and people hated it)
 
To me, the MC maps add a little 'too much' for me on the server. When I want to play Minecraft we have awesome servers to play on. I'm more on the side of some classic TTT maps.
